{"id":483,"date":"2022-01-03T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/the-pain-zone-the-crucial-distance-to-go-from-where-you-are-to-where-you-want-to-be\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T16:37:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T16:37:08","slug":"the-pain-zone-the-crucial-distance-to-go-from-where-you-are-to-where-you-want-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/the-pain-zone-the-crucial-distance-to-go-from-where-you-are-to-where-you-want-to-be\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Get Your Financial Shit Together in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you\u2019re the intended audience for this post, it\u2019ll do a few things for you:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">These are the intended outcomes of a successful visit to the Financial Pain Zone, so you can understand why we\u2019re doing what we\u2019re doing:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You realize (after stripping away all extraneous spending) that your life satisfaction didn\u2019t really go down.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You hone more clearly <em>which <\/em>of your luxury expenses you actually miss.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You gain respect for your ability to deny yourself pleasures in the moment. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You feel financially in control for the first time in recent memory. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s go on a visualization journey together, shall we?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I want you to imagine the \u201cyou\u201d that you are today, financially \u2013 and brownie points for this exercise if you\u2019re currently unsatisfied with your financial standing. Maybe you\u2019re living inexplicably paycheck to paycheck, or maybe you\u2019re in a lot of consumer debt and can\u2019t get your head above water. Whatever it is, I want you to imagine that version of you. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now, I want you to imagine the version of you that is <em>not <\/em>living paycheck to paycheck, is <em>not<\/em> in a load of debt, and is successfully living your financial life proactively, rather than reactively. Imagine that version of you. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now imagine them like two endpoints on a timeline:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">(you\u2019re here) \u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014 (and you want to be here!)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That distance in the middle? That\u2019s<strong> the Pain Zone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I talk to folks all the time who are (a) in consumer debt, (b) living paycheck-to-paycheck despite great incomes, and (c) totally lost about how to get out of it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The problem, most of the time, is that they\u2019re interested in attaining a different outcome \u2013&nbsp;but they\u2019re <strong>not willing to change their behavior<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now, sometimes people are in bad situations <em>not<\/em> because of their behavior \u2013 and there are almost too many scenarios of that nature to recount here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019m talking about, \u201cI make good money but I don\u2019t know where it all goes and I can\u2019t seem to get my head above water.\u201d I\u2019m <em>not<\/em> talking about, \u201cI\u2019m in medical debt because of something out of my control and wage stagnation is crushing me.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Being able to identify when there\u2019s a systemic or structural issue blocking your path vs. <em>you<\/em> blocking your own path is necessary in discussions like these, so please know that this post is directed toward those who feel they\u2019re blocking their <em>own<\/em> paths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Whether subconsciously or not, a short-term interruption in their current lifestyle is not something they\u2019re willing to accommodate, even if it means going from the paycheck-to-paycheck, stuck-in-the-debt-mud bullshit to total and complete freedom. As humans, we have a way of being short-sighted sometimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I can see why: If you\u2019re currently living the lifestyle you want (expensive place, nice leased car, fancy dinners out every week, hair appointments every 8 weeks), it can feel like a big, fat drag when someone taps you on the shoulder and reminds you, \u201c<em>Hey, you actually can\u2019t afford this stuff<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This blog post applies a relatively harsh methodology called \u201cthe Pain Zone\u201d to the problem: Because sometimes, when we\u2019re <em>too<\/em> soft and gentle with ourselves, we end up inadvertently putting ourselves in a worse position<em>. <\/em>We\u2019re going to embrace tough love today, but know that it\u2019s the same tough love I showed <em>myself<\/em> a few years ago when I realized my spending was way out of line.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I saw this a lot when I used to live in Dallas: I had a lot of friends and acquaintances who were living as though they made a <em>lot<\/em> more money than they did. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s the rat race we\u2019re all familiar with \u2013 and in hushed tones at fancy dinners out or after $35 workout classes, someone would tell me that they were in a ton of credit card debt, had no idea how they were going to pay their bills that month, or that they were stressed about their financial situation (then they\u2019d leave said $35 workout class in a lululemon outfit, Gucci slides, and hop into a brand new BMW to drive to brunch at Nobu). <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Put simply: Sometimes our behavior doesn\u2019t really support our goals or what we <em>actually <\/em>want because we\u2019re trapped in a cycle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It feels like it\u2019ll require a <strong>permanent shift <\/strong>in lifestyle to fix the problem, and that feels painful and shitty \u2013 so it\u2019s easier (albeit unsustainable) to carry on in the status quo, because at least that doesn\u2019t require deprivation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019d like to propose another way to think about it:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Fixing your financial shit: A short (but satisfying) visit to \u201cthe Pain Zone\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This already sounds like I\u2019m introducing a new special on whatever channel airs WWE wrestling. I\u2019m experiencing regret. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But here\u2019s the thing: It\u2019s impossible to get out of \u201creactivity\u201d mode without changing your behavior. The <strong>only <\/strong>strategy that enables you to continue living the way you have been is finding a higher paying job, but even that\u2019s a slippery slope (because #lifestylecreep).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Living paycheck-to-paycheck (or being in a lot of consumer debt) typically has a way of blurring our vision for the future: As Ramit says, it\u2019s like driving in a blizzard where you can only see 50 feet ahead. It\u2019s often difficult to imagine a future beyond that 50-foot view. We have to find a way to stop the snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So when faced with the tough behavioral decisions, the path of least resistance is usually to do nothing \u2013&nbsp;resume business as usual, go deeper into debt or continue merely treading water, and waste more time that your money could be compounding in the market instead, right? Even typing that sentence felt bleak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Rather than thinking about it like a permanent lifestyle shift, think about it like a short stint of <strong>financial triage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s begin:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Short-term crash dieting doesn\u2019t work \u2013&nbsp;but short-term crash budgeting might<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Depending on how much debt you\u2019re in, this \u201cPain Zone\u201d probably only needs to last a few months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Technically speaking, it\u2019s <strong>the length of time between (a) the start of your crash budget and (b) the credit card statement closing on the crash budget\u2019s first month of spending<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Because typically, you need to wait for your credit card statements to catch up with you. If I start cutting back seriously in January, that\u2019s great \u2013&nbsp;but the credit card bill that comes <em>due <\/em>in January will likely be from late November\/early December spending. There\u2019s a six-week lag time to muscle through before you\u2019ll see your new habits reflected on a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I have a theory that it usually goes a little bit like this:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Person decides they\u2019re ready to get their shit together<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">For a couple weeks, they cut back on going out to eat, delete their Amazon bookmark, and otherwise feel emotions of deprivation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Credit card bill from two months ago comes due, it\u2019s still high as f***, and they\u2019re overcome with the emotion of, \u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Cycle resumes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Anticipate that lag time. The Pain Zone is going to feel uncomfortable, because you\u2019re trying to reintroduce <em>wiggle room <\/em>into a financial life that previously didn\u2019t have any. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now, the Pain Zone is not the place to be kind, forgiving, and lenient \u2013&nbsp;the Pain Zone is the place to prioritize self-discipline, apply tough love, and respect yourself financially. A place to really <strong>show up as the person you want to become<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Remember: This isn\u2019t forever. This is financial P90X, in both intensity and timeline. Before we can start making proactive steps toward growing your wealth, we have to stop the bleeding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The Pain Zone is the place where we stop the bleeding.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A playbook for the Pain Zone<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Mindset: That problematic queen Jillian Michaels<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019m all for self-love and self-care and self-obsession and whatever else Gwyneth Paltrow is selling on Goop.com these days, but the Pain Zone is not the place to care for your innermost flower. The Pain Zone is the place where you forge yourself in fire. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I use this tactic with myself whenever I\u2019m being whiny, and it\u2019s helped me hone my ability to discern between, \u201cOh, shit, I\u2019m on the edge of burnout and I need to turn it down a notch,\u201d and, \u201cI\u2019m just being self-indulgent and lazy and I need a reality check about how good I have it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The tactic? <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Speaking to yourself like you\u2019re none other than the problematic Jillian Michaels training The Biggest Loser contestants. (I know, okay? I already acknowledged it\u2019s problematic. But do you want to feel warm and fuzzy, or do you want to get results?)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I will <em>literally<\/em> say to myself out loud, \u201cDon\u2019t be a little bitch. You have everything you need to figure this out, and it\u2019ll be worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In a culture where self-care is packaged and sold more like self-<em>soothing<\/em>, it makes sense why we\u2019ve all lost this edge a little bit. Sometimes the ability to show yourself tough love is the greatest gift you can give. Sometimes acknowledging that your utmost priority in life doesn\u2019t have to be your own comfort and convenience can go a long, long way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is the attitude you take into the Pain Zone. You\u2019re taking no prisoners. You\u2019re not negotiating with terrorists. [other problematic military analogies]<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I cannot stress enough how important this step is. You are not a delicate flower. You\u2019re a competent adult, and you\u2019re capable of foregoing life\u2019s luxuries for six weeks to make a permanent positive impact on your life. Sometimes <em>truly<\/em> taking care of yourself is ripping off the Bandaid and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable for a little while.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your approach to spending for the next 90 days is bare-ass bones<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That\u2019s right \u2013&nbsp;you\u2019re going full bare bones for 60 to 90 days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hair and nail appointments? Cancel them. Boozy brunch? Not on your watch! Remember, it\u2019s not <em>permanent<\/em> \u2013 we just need to buy enough time to break the cycle of continuously piling the debt higher and give ourselves some reassessment breathing room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And you know what? I think there are two levels here:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Level 1: High structural expenses<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Put simply, are you paying for rent you can\u2019t afford or a car that\u2019s out of your depth? Do this with me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What\u2019s your net income every month? In other words what are you bringing in?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now, what\u2019s 28% of that number? <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If the cost of the roof over your head is much more than 28% of your net income, I\u2019d take a long, hard look at it and ask myself:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cIs this worth it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Housing that eats up too much of your net income is insidious, and it\u2019s nearly impossible to \u201cfrugal\u201d your way out of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is another area where tough love matters: Before you immediately start generating explanations (\u201cHousing is expensive where I live!\u201d), ask yourself: Do you <em>need<\/em> to live there? Could you move to a slightly different neighborhood, get roommates, or explore other options? <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The same goes for the car. Leasing a Mercedes on $55,000 per year? It\u2019s likely that the monthly payment is going to spread you thinner than necessary. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/why-you-need-to-sell-your-car\" target=\"_blank\">Here\u2019s a post about the drain an expensive car can have on your net worth.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019m not saying you need to move and sell your car, but\u2026 you <em>might<\/em> need to move and sell your car if you want to create lasting change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">These aren\u2019t necessarily things you\u2019ll be able to do in the six weeks you spend in the Pain Zone, but it\u2019s helpful to start getting real with yourself about whether or not you\u2019re living above your means in these fundamentally structural expense areas \u2013&nbsp;even 2-3 months in the Pain Zone with discretionary spending won\u2019t much matter if your rent costs 50% of your take-home pay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You\u2019ll be treading water from your luxury apartment\u2019s plunge pool forever, and that\u2019s about the least luxurious thing I can imagine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And if you need help with kickstarting tracking some of this stuff during your time in the Pain Zone, I recommend Copilot \u2013&nbsp;it\u2019s the most user-friendly spending tracker I\u2019ve ever used (by far), and the one that actually clicked for all of my less-than-enthusiastic-about-budgeting friends. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Level 2: High discretionary spending<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Blowing $1,000 per week at Whole Foods but using Uber Eats for lunch every day? I\u2019m looking at you!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is the arena that\u2019s <em>way<\/em> easier to win in during your Tour de Pain Zone, because your day-to-day behavior has a direct influence on it. Remember: Spending approach is <em>Amish<\/em>, not <em>Kardashian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We\u2019re in financial triage mode. It\u2019s not forever. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It doesn\u2019t <em>have <\/em>to be sustainable in nature, because it\u2019s not designed to be. It\u2019s <em>just<\/em> designed to allow you to get your arms around the bills coming in and start to make progress forward. To create some positive momentum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Again, it\u2019ll be difficult to see a ton of headway with cutting discretionary spending alone if your structural expenses are obscenely high, but typically, someone who\u2019s living in the nicest apartment in town and driving a leased luxury car isn\u2019t foregoing luxuries elsewhere. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Cutting back to any extent during this time in the Pain Zone will be helpful, but cutting back ruthlessly works best. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Half-assing it will leave you underwhelmed. The goal is to <em>experience<\/em> what it feels like to have money left over at the end of the month. Until you <em>feel<\/em> that (and how much better it is than what the money could buy), you\u2019ll be swimming upstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/app\/apple-store\/id1447330651\" target=\"_blank\">Copilot<\/a> can help with assessing these discretionary purchases, too, because it pulls in the last six months of data for any accounts you link \u2013 which means you\u2019ll be able to look back and compare your previous spending with your Pain Zone spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You may even be surprised at what you find after ruthlessly cutting back: <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sometimes forcing yourself into an intensely simple way of life has unexpected positive outcomes. To quote Seneca:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cSet aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with course and rough dress, saying to yourself the while: &#8216;Is this the condition that I feared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">All right, Tim Ferriss, that\u2019s enough. #RichGirl translation: \u201cWow, I haven\u2019t had bottomless mimosas or new Align leggings in two months and my life\u2026 isn\u2019t any worse?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The modern luxuries we love are just that \u2013&nbsp;luxuries. To trick ourselves into believing we need them to be happy is good for nobody but those who stand to profit off the decisions.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Life after the Pain Zone<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So I\u2019ve (repetitively) reminded you throughout this article that the Pain Zone is a temporary stop on your journey, not the destination. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What do you do after the Pain Zone?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Allow me to outline the expected positive outcomes:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>You realize<\/strong> (after stripping away all extraneous spending) <strong>that your life satisfaction didn\u2019t really go down.<\/strong> In fact, maybe you discovered cheap (or free) activities that brought you even more joy (spending more time in nature, hanging out with your parents for free food at first but later for their actual company, exercising, getting to know the inside of Netflix\u2019s new releases more intimately, sleeping more, etc.). For me, personally, my visit to the Pain Zone was actually a really nice experience because it <em>simplified<\/em> my life \u2013&nbsp;expensive habits often beget more expensive habits, and they typically require maintenance and juggling (fancy car means fancy car washes, nail and lash appointments mean stringent refill schedules, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>You hone more clearly <em>which <\/em>of your luxury expenses you actually miss. <\/strong>For me, I didn\u2019t miss manicures. I actually found it was <em>much less<\/em> stressful to have naked nails, because I wasn\u2019t squeezing  gel nail appointments into an already-busy schedule. I also didn\u2019t miss expensive dinners out. I realized that I actually enjoyed eating at home (shocking) and felt better, too, without as much restaurant food in my diet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>You gain respect for your ability to deny yourself pleasures in the moment.<\/strong> There\u2019s something to be said (psychologically) for believing you\u2019re a disciplined person, but in order to believe that about yourself, you have to exercise personal discipline. There\u2019s no better place to impress yourself than the Pain Zone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>You feel financially in control for the first time in recent memory<\/strong>. Your credit card bill doesn\u2019t make you cringe. Maybe you begin to enjoy the feeling of not looking at bills through squinted eyes more than you enjoy the expensive luxuries that lead to squinty-eye bills. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In summary, sustainable change that feels good has its time and place \u2013&nbsp;but take-no-bullshit, rip-the-Bandaid-off discipline does, too. Being <em>too<\/em> gentle with yourself may inadvertently imply a self-defeating \u201ctruth\u201d: <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That you\u2019re not capable of making serious change or denying yourself all of life\u2019s luxuries, even when you simply can\u2019t afford them <em>yet<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sustainable financial change is the marathon. The Pain Zone is the sprint off the couch.
