{"id":215,"date":"2021-04-19T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/how-to-spend-money-when-youve-decided-youre-going-to\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T17:05:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T17:05:01","slug":"how-to-spend-money-when-youve-decided-youre-going-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/how-to-spend-money-when-youve-decided-youre-going-to\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Spend Money When You\u2019ve Decided You\u2019re Going To"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/unsplash-image-HjfkPgfg0XY.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In my world, there are two types of people:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">People who are desperately trying to control their spending habits and feel borderline out of control or unable to cut back<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">People who are so obsessed with frugality that the act of spending money (whether necessary or not) causes physical pain<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It certainly begs the question \u2013&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Does anyone have a healthy relationship with their spending, or is everyone just hopscotching between extremes?<\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Regardless, a lot of personal finance content focuses on trying to get people to spend less. Here\u2019s what your daily latte is costing you! Sell your Mercedes! Invest in a wardrobe of fitted burlap sacks and swear off the Anthropologie sale section forever!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Rarely do we take a minute to address the other extreme of people: those who <em>don\u2019t <\/em>need to be told to stop spending. Those who need to be told, \u201cHey, money is <em>for<\/em> spending. You don\u2019t have to self-flagellate for spending $4 on an almond croissant on a Sunday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">How do you spend money guiltlessly when you\u2019ve decided you\u2019re going to?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As someone who is absolutely in the, \u201cI\u2019d rather paint my face using 10-year-old drugstore foundation with a damp dish sponge than spend money,\u201d camp, know that the things I\u2019m about to tell you are things that I\u2019m constantly telling <strong>myself<\/strong>, too. (Because \u2013&nbsp;surprise! \u2013&nbsp;these articles are usually more about me finding a sort of financial catharsis and then publishing it for thousands of strangers to judge than anything else. Whoops.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Granted, if you\u2019re someone who needs the AmEx physically removed from your clutches in order to live below your means, you probably don\u2019t need this advice. But know that <em>you, too,<\/em> can develop an unhealthy relationship with frugality if you beat yourself down hard enough! Woohoo!<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Reminder #1<\/strong>: The intent of having a budget that <strong>prioritizes saving and investing first<\/strong> is providing the ability to guiltlessly spend what\u2019s leftover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you\u2019re using a tool like <a href=\"\/personal-finance-wealth-planner-tool\/wealth-planners\" target=\"_blank\">the Wealth Planner<\/a> that makes a recommendation for your <strong>minimum save rate<\/strong> upfront, know that the intent is to help you determine what you CAN spend every month without feeling bad about it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Obviously, the more you can save, the better \u2013&nbsp;but if you\u2019re someone that\u2019s <em>already<\/em> saving more than half your income (or thereabout), take a step back with me for a moment \u2013&nbsp;this isn\u2019t about comparing yourself to anyone else or using relativity to feel better, but rather to recognize that if you\u2019re <strong>already<\/strong> hitting your saving and investing goals, the leftovers are <strong>intended for spending<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Where people get themselves into trouble is creating a budget wherein all spending considerations are determined upfront, then the saving and investing decisions are made using whatever\u2019s left over. If you\u2019re the type of person who has a hard time spending, I have a feeling that wasn\u2019t your approach to your budget. Honor the fact that you\u2019ve prioritized your saving and investing goals, and give yourself permission to spend what\u2019s left. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And if you feel like your budget allots TOO much money for spending, then revisit it! Your budget should change and evolve with you. If, in your gut, you know you could be doing better, rebuild the plan to reflect that. Then, resume living your life \u2013 guilt-free.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Reminder #2<\/strong>: The ability to sustain your financial plan as <strong>an enjoyable lifestyle over time <\/strong>is ultimately the most important contributing factor to you reaching your goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Taking an overly extreme approach to saving is a little bit like crash-dieting. You might see insane results upfront, but ultimately, you won\u2019t be able to keep it up long enough for it matter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Building a lifestyle that you enjoy \u2013&nbsp;one that makes you feel supported, relaxed, and content \u2013&nbsp;is one that you won\u2019t have any trouble maintaining for years to come. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Because let\u2019s be honest: Any plan that forces you to feel constantly uncomfortable and guilty isn\u2019t going to work for more than a few weeks or months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Know that you\u2019re going to get <strong>further<\/strong> ahead by allowing yourself the small indulgences along the way instead of denying yourself at every turn. The compound interest calculator has a dark side, and the personal finance community loves to whip it out to shame each other for basic, normal decisions \u2013&nbsp;\u201cYour $8 burrito dinner would become $1,000 over the next 30 years!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Take a step back and don\u2019t let anyone weaponize compounding: Ask yourself (really, ask yourself) what <strong>balance<\/strong> feels right to you. In fact, take it to its logical extreme: What if you really <em>did<\/em> look at a compound interest calculator every single time you wanted to buy something? Would you lock yourself in your basement with a bag of rice and a can of beans and re-read old Goosebumps novels from middle school to avoid risking spending a few bucks on your own happiness?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Life is hard. Especially during a pandemic. If a few little pleasures brighten your day and enable you to keep this plan for the long-term, those pleasures <em>themselves <\/em>are an investment in your own longevity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Reminder #3<\/strong>: Apply a <strong>value-based<\/strong> spending approach \u2013&nbsp;as long as you\u2019re not on autopilot, you\u2019ll make good decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">There\u2019s nothing inherently wrong with spending money. Where I think we get it wrong sometimes is that we tend to spend money mindlessly. Bored? Spend. Tired? Spend. Sad? Spend. Happy? Spend!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When we\u2019re zombie-swiping through our lives at every twist and turn, we\u2019re screwing ourselves on two levels:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The money is gone<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We aren\u2019t even enjoying or deriving value from what we\u2019re exchanging it for<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Whether the purchase you\u2019re thinking about is big or small, look at it through the lens of the value it\u2019s going to bring to your life: Are you buying it because you\u2019ve always bought it? Or because you know it\u2019s going to truly enhance your life in some way, big or small? <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A big part of giving yourself permission to spend when you\u2019ve decided you\u2019re going to is reminding yourself of the intent of the purchase: That goes for a splurge-y $5 cortado at noon on a Monday because it\u2019s dreary and you\u2019ve got five hours of meetings ahead of you, or the Peloton you\u2019ve been eyeing for years that would streamline the shit out of your morning routine and blast you with endorphins for years to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI\u2019m trading $X for a commensurate (or greater) amount of value that this purchase is going to bring to my life.\u201d Big or small, it\u2019s worth acknowledging explicitly if you find yourself experiencing guilt or shame around spending. <\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Final thoughts<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Being a high-achieving, goal-oriented person determined to hit financial goals isn\u2019t a bad thing, but it can definitely be taken to a self-defeating extreme. Remember the <strong>point<\/strong> of the financial freedom you\u2019re gunning so hard for: Happiness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s flesh that out:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Why am I trying so hard to save as much as possible\/invest every penny\/avoid frivolous spending?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So I can reach financial freedom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Why do I want financial freedom?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So I can be free! <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Why do I want to be free?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So I can control my time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Why do I want to control my time?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So I can be <strong>happy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The end goal is happiness. The end goal is not sitting hunch-backed atop a mountain of hundred-dollar bills and casting out impulse purchases with disdain forever. It\u2019s to give yourself the time and freedom to really enjoy your life!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Denying yourself all the enjoyment and happiness now in order to be happy later is counterintuitive. You can hit your goals and still allow yourself to enjoy the money you\u2019ve deemed \u201cspendable.\u201d Ignoring every pleasure along the way may get you there a few years sooner, but it means the years it <em>does <\/em>consume will be pretty sad. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s a journey in trusting yourself to make good decisions. And when you don\u2019t make a good decision, it\u2019s an opportunity to learn what you value and what you don\u2019t.
