{"id":188,"date":"2020-10-05T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/how-to-decide-when-to-use-your-points\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T19:46:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T19:46:04","slug":"how-to-decide-when-to-use-your-points","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/how-to-decide-when-to-use-your-points\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Decide When to Use Your Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">October 2020<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-asset-6-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Ideally, the answer is, \u201cAll the time, because I have millions of them.\u201d But for those of us who haven\u2019t crossed the 7-figure points mark, a little strategy is involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The weird thing about this dilemma \u2013&nbsp;when to pay with points and when to pay with cash so you can <em>earn<\/em> <em>more<\/em> points \u2013&nbsp;is that it becomes an emotional one, when in reality, the system that should guide our decision-making is actually quite algorithmic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That is to say: I\u2019ve found myself agonizing over whether I should burn the points on a certain trip or just use \u201creal money,\u201d even when it\u2019s clearly a good redemption value, just like I\u2019ve found myself burning points like they\u2019re Monopoly money when I knew the redemption value wasn\u2019t all that great.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Often times the financial context of our life from month to month can impact this decision \u2013&nbsp;if you\u2019re already over-budget, it can be painful to tally another few hundred bucks in the Travel category when your points bank is sitting there staring at you from Loophole Central. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Acknowledging that it\u2019s not always cut-and-dry (even when it technically should be), let\u2019s talk through how you can decide whether or not you should pay with points or dollars.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When to pay with cash<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The magic number you want to isolate here is <strong>redemption value<\/strong>. Luckily, all you need to find it is:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A 4th grade understanding of long division<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The price in points<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The price in dollars<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Once you\u2019ve got that, you want to do the following equation:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">[<em>the cost of the flight or hotel in dollars<\/em>] \u00f7 [<em>the cost of the flight or hotel in points<\/em>] = <strong>the value of each point for this transaction, <\/strong>which tells you whether or not it\u2019s a good time to use your points<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s do an example, because I was never great in math class and making it \u201creal\u201d helps me understand:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s pretend you\u2019re debating between spending <strong>$200<\/strong> on a flight or spending <strong>18,000<\/strong> points on Southwest, where Rapid Rewards points are valued, on average, at about 1.5 cents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">$200 \u00f7 18,000 = your 18,000 points are worth <strong>1.1 cents\/each<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So what do you do? 1.1 cents per point isn\u2019t a great redemption value \u2013&nbsp;remember, the <em>average<\/em> value is about 1.5 cents. What would happen if you paid $200 for the flight?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s say you could <em>earn<\/em> an incremental 1,500 points by buying the flight with cash, which would (on average) be worth about $22.50 in the future when you redeem them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In this sense, you can treat those earned points almost like \u201cmoney off\u201d \u2013&nbsp;$22.50 in points makes your $200 flight\u2019s net cost $177.50. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In situations like these, it really could go either way \u2013&nbsp;if you have tons of points and Companion Pass, it\u2019s probably not a big deal. If you have, say, 20,000 points <em>total<\/em>, this might not be the flight to spend them on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In summary:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Pay with cash when <\/em><strong><em>the redemption value for the points significantly undermines the average value of a point<\/em><\/strong><em> (I always just Google it, but I\u2019m thinking about developing my own calculations based on average redemption values and posting them here\u2026 stay tuned).<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Of course, context matters, and if you\u2019re sitting on 200,000 Rapid Rewards points, you\u2019ll probably pay with points no matter what.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When to pay with points<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s switch gears and use a more agnostic example for this one. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re perusing the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal for a hotel room and you stumble across a room that costs either $266 or 21,820 points (I pulled this example for the Residence Inn by Marriott in Big Sky, Montana because I\u2019m trying to drop hints to the universe that I really want to go).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">$266 \u00f7 21,820 points = about 1.23 cents per point<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hmph. This isn\u2019t great, especially for Ultimate Rewards points. Let\u2019s try another one from the same list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">$354 \u00f7 25,512 points = about 1.4 cents per point<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That\u2019s a little better! Anything encroaching on 1.5 cents per point is a no-brainer for me. <strong>A lot of the value assigned to the \u201caverage\u201d Ultimate Rewards points value comes from the fact that they can become ludicrously valuable when <em>transferred<\/em><\/strong> (like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/your-guide-to-chase-ultimate-rewards-transfer-partners-airlines-and-hotels\" target=\"_blank\">$1,300 flight<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/how-to-transfer-your-chase-points-to-a-high-value-partner-hyatt\" target=\"_blank\">$950 hotel room<\/a> for 35,000 points), but in my experience, the value of a point in the Ultimate Rewards portal itself stays relatively consistent \u2013&nbsp;it seems like they have a more-or-less set algorithm determining the dollars-to-points value.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Where you\u2019ll probably find the most extreme discrepancies between points &amp; dollars<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards portals will usually have (relatively) consistent ratios. In other words, you probably won\u2019t often find situations in which the points are worth 2.5 cents each. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">One thing to note here is that the Platinum\u2019s <strong>Fine Hotels &amp; Resorts Collection<\/strong> does make certain redemptions crazy valuable, since the booking comes with so many more perks (resort credits, free breakfasts, late checkout, etc. \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/a-safe-ish-2020-vacation-las-vegas-amp-zion-national-park\" target=\"_blank\">I covered this more extensively here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Where you\u2019re more likely to see points values fluctuating is directly booking with the hotelier or airline \u2013&nbsp;this is because the airlines and hotels offer peak and off-peak pricing models, in a lot of cases. Some are upfront about it and will share their reward charts (Bonvoy\u2019s is included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/bonvoy\" target=\"_blank\">my Bonvoy deep dive<\/a> and Hyatt\u2019s is included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/how-to-transfer-your-chase-points-to-a-high-value-partner-hyatt\" target=\"_blank\">my Hyatt transfer guide<\/a>), while others (read: airlines) have mostly done away with these award charts that describe the floors and ceilings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In other words, you know you\u2019ll always be able to find a \u201cCategory 1\u201d hotel for, say, 5,000 points, and that the most you\u2019d ever spend is 90,000 points\/night (hypothetically). <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When an award chart is removed from the equation, a flight could cost as little (or as much) as the airline wants, for reasons we\u2019ll never know, and it makes it less predictable (and usually, more expensive).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In summary<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your best bet is to use the equation every time and determine if the redemption value is good compared to what the geniuses of the internet say is the average \u2013&nbsp;but honestly, the more I think about it, the more I feel like I want to come up with my own point valuations because sometimes I disagree with the powers that be.
